Headed Back to Kigali

This morning we ate a quick breakfast at the hospital ( a peace corps worker from Maryland joined us) and headed out back for Kigali! It was bittersweet leaving Shyira. I was so impressed with their staff and I just loved all the people there especially because of last night playing at the soccer field. We saw the cutest thing as we were leaving… We saw a huge group of children marching down the street in two lines and singing songs as they went. When we got closer we realized a little girl in the front had a white veil on and bouquet made out of ribbon or something. They were playing wedding! It was so so adorable. The drive back to Kigali went so fast. I could look out the window at those views all day long. When we got to the city we finally got to eat lunch at the Hotel Des Mille Collienes. It was super good! We were all so tired of potatoes and beans so the food there was much appreciated! When we got back we got to work on our final presentations for tomorrow. Suzanna hadn’t typed her paper yet so we got a little bit of a late start but thats okay because it gave me time to put all of our photos on our slides. I am so happy we got the topic of nutrition. I think that is what I have been most passionate about since being here. After a long and hot afternoon working on presentations we got to meet Dr.Page for dinner! I don’t know why but seeing a familiar face was really nice! And it was Dr.Page so it was super fun! We got dinner at an Italian restaurant at the Marriot hotel. It was super delicious and had the best mango juice I have had in Africa so far. When we got back I was super tired and ready for bed. We have to get up early for our presentations tomorrow! Im excited to present!

Day 1 - Arrival in Kigali

Well after 36 HOURS of traveling we finally made it to Kigali! It was a smooth trip from Salt Lake City, we made all of our connections just fine. The flights were really really long but luckily I was able to sleep for parts of them. Other than that I just read some material for the internship and watched movies! We got through customs quite fast and when we went outside Solange was waiting for us! She is a Rwandan native who is one of our coordinators here. She is very nice and bubbly. She helped us exchange our money for Rwandan Francs and we were off! She led us to a big white bus which will be our transportation for this trip! As we enjoyed driving by the beautiful hills and city life in Kigali, Solange told us all about the culture, foods, and activities that we have to look forward to! After about 25 minutes of driving we arrived at the guesthouse we are staying at for the duration of the trip. We were surprised to find out that the guesthouse is connected to a catholic church

University of Rwanda Day 3 and Departure for the SAFARI!

What a day! We started our day o ff  at the University of Rwanda for the last day of the global health practicum. Our leader Waleed gave the lecture this morning. Today was my favorite day yet! We talked about how storytelling was becoming an extremely important aspect in public health. This is in terms of conveying a convincing message to patients you are trying to educate, donors you are trying to get funds from and educating government o ffi cials on the importance of health policy. We split up into groups and we had to come up with a play about a given health topic. My groups topic was maternal mortality. I was the only American in my group so it was a little challenging to communicate with my team to create a play but somehow we made it work! Most of the plays ended up being a little comical despite the topics simply because of the language barrier. It was a really fun morning! Hello! Thank you for following my journey in Rwanda as a global health intern. I am so excited for this opportunity, I am constantly pinching myself because it feels like a dream that I get to travel to such an amazing place and learn about what I love most... medicine and public health!
