Safari Time!

Well The safari was amazing! We just drove through the park in our land cruiser for about 7 hours! The top comes off of the car so we got to stand on the seats and stick our heads out to look at everything! Pretty much everywhere you looked you could see something cool once we got deep into the park. Our driver/guide didn’t really talk at all so we kind of had to guess what things were haha. I wish he could’ve given us facts about what animals we saw and where we were but thats okay! The ride was really peaceful and the silence gave us opportunity to take everything in. We had to be super quiet anyways otherwise all the animals would be scared off. We saw SO many hippos and crocodiles! They are both huge!!! I would never want to find myself in the lakes out here. Haha there are scary things in there; hippos, crocs, snakes and who knows what else! The giraffes were probably my favorite part! Halfway through our safari we stopped in this grassland for lunch and there were probably about 20 giraffes around us! There were also impala, warthogs, water bucks and zebras! It was a really cool experience. We were SO dusty afterwards! I wiped off my face and the cloth was just red from the roads, I also sneezed and that was red too ha sorry thats gross! When we got back we just ate a yummy dinner again and played cards! Tomorrow is our day off so we are just relaxing at the hotel until after lunch then heading back to Kigali! It will be nice to have a day off! We have filled every day to the max!

Day 1 - Arrival in Kigali

Well after 36 HOURS of traveling we finally made it to Kigali! It was a smooth trip from Salt Lake City, we made all of our connections just fine. The flights were really really long but luckily I was able to sleep for parts of them. Other than that I just read some material for the internship and watched movies! We got through customs quite fast and when we went outside Solange was waiting for us! She is a Rwandan native who is one of our coordinators here. She is very nice and bubbly. She helped us exchange our money for Rwandan Francs and we were off! She led us to a big white bus which will be our transportation for this trip! As we enjoyed driving by the beautiful hills and city life in Kigali, Solange told us all about the culture, foods, and activities that we have to look forward to! After about 25 minutes of driving we arrived at the guesthouse we are staying at for the duration of the trip. We were surprised to find out that the guesthouse is connected to a catholic church

University of Rwanda Day 3 and Departure for the SAFARI!

What a day! We started our day o ff  at the University of Rwanda for the last day of the global health practicum. Our leader Waleed gave the lecture this morning. Today was my favorite day yet! We talked about how storytelling was becoming an extremely important aspect in public health. This is in terms of conveying a convincing message to patients you are trying to educate, donors you are trying to get funds from and educating government o ffi cials on the importance of health policy. We split up into groups and we had to come up with a play about a given health topic. My groups topic was maternal mortality. I was the only American in my group so it was a little challenging to communicate with my team to create a play but somehow we made it work! Most of the plays ended up being a little comical despite the topics simply because of the language barrier. It was a really fun morning! Hello! Thank you for following my journey in Rwanda as a global health intern. I am so excited for this opportunity, I am constantly pinching myself because it feels like a dream that I get to travel to such an amazing place and learn about what I love most... medicine and public health! First of all I would like to thank my family, friends, professors and anyone else who has helped make this internship possible, it really is a dream come true.
