Last Full Day in Rwanda - Final Presentations!

Today we did our final presentations at the University of Rwanda. It was a big day for everyone involved because we had to compile all of our experiences into 20 minutes and the University of Rwanda students who have been helping us for the last 3 weeks were defending their final thesis to their professors. I just have to say I am so amazed the the UR students. They are so generous and loving to us! They devoted two whole weeks of the time for free to help us in the health center and the hospital! All while preparing the biggest presentation in their College careers! They even stayed up through the night to finish their presentations because they were helping us during the day. They are truly amazing. I loved presenting on nutrition and I think it went well! It was cool to watch everyone's presentations and listen to their thoughts about the experiences we had. It was a great way to conclude the internship! After our presentations we went to Java again! It was very good. We had a break for the afternoon and I just started packing and gathering all my things together. In the evening we had our farewell dinner and the University of Rwanda students came. It was SO much fun! they sang for us and we danced. At the end we sang together and it was so special. I will cherish their friendships forever! Tonight was a perfect finish to our trip. Rwanda has a huge piece of my heart!!! I will miss it here. Tomorrow we head home at about 4 and get back on Sunday night at 11pm. I am not looking forward to the flights but I'm excited to see my family!!!

Day 1 - Arrival in Kigali

Well after 36 HOURS of traveling we finally made it to Kigali! It was a smooth trip from Salt Lake City, we made all of our connections just fine. The flights were really really long but luckily I was able to sleep for parts of them. Other than that I just read some material for the internship and watched movies! We got through customs quite fast and when we went outside Solange was waiting for us! She is a Rwandan native who is one of our coordinators here. She is very nice and bubbly. She helped us exchange our money for Rwandan Francs and we were off! She led us to a big white bus which will be our transportation for this trip! As we enjoyed driving by the beautiful hills and city life in Kigali, Solange told us all about the culture, foods, and activities that we have to look forward to! After about 25 minutes of driving we arrived at the guesthouse we are staying at for the duration of the trip. We were surprised to find out that the guesthouse is connected to a catholic church

University of Rwanda Day 3 and Departure for the SAFARI!

What a day! We started our day o ff  at the University of Rwanda for the last day of the global health practicum. Our leader Waleed gave the lecture this morning. Today was my favorite day yet! We talked about how storytelling was becoming an extremely important aspect in public health. This is in terms of conveying a convincing message to patients you are trying to educate, donors you are trying to get funds from and educating government o ffi cials on the importance of health policy. We split up into groups and we had to come up with a play about a given health topic. My groups topic was maternal mortality. I was the only American in my group so it was a little challenging to communicate with my team to create a play but somehow we made it work! A Day in the Life of a Global Health Intern (Part 2) - Biryogo Health Center Day 3

Today was an amazing day!! I felt like a real public health official! We began the day by presenting our IPC observations and solutions with the IPC coordinator, Cecille and the Health Center director, Veronica. Suzanna, Elise and I presented our findings in the nutrition and vaccination area. They seemed to take our feedback very well. There were a few misunderstandings that took a little while to talk out but I think those were mainly due to gaps in translation. We were talking about how nurses should never recap their needles and they ran out and got sharps boxes and showed us how to assemble them. We knew they used sharps boxes and they did a great job at it! It took us a while to calm them down and explain that we weren’t talking about their sharps box use. They were extremely gracious in taking our criticism and very happy we were there to help them out.
