Sunday at the Safari and Back to Kigali

Today we just chilled at the hotel in the morning. We got caught up on sleep and wrote in our journals. We ate a yummy breakfast and lunch and then headed out.  It was nice to relax before a big week at the Biryogo Health Center!

This morning we got up bright and early to head to the Biryogo health center where we will be working this week! Today and tomorrow will be completely for observation and evaluation. We took most of the day touring the facilities and learning about the programs they had available. The health center definitely struggle with resources compared to their intake and there is a lot of work to do. With that said, they are doing great despite their circumstances. Their model is really cool. Not only do they provide healthcare but also social services and educational services. They have numerous community health education programs and a primary school where the children in the sector can go for a couple of years!  The health center is like a small clinic that sees basic patients. Gardens for Health International and King Faisal Hospital

Today we started the day by visiting Gardens for Health International. This is by far my favorite organization we have visited so far! So this organization takes an integrated approach to end malnutrition. They work at the intersection of health and agriculture to reduce the rates of chronic childhood malnutrition in the poorer neighborhoods in Kigali and the Gasabo District. So what they do is work closely with local health posts or the sector’s health center to identify children under 5 years old who are malnourished. From there they teach mothers how to grow and prepare healthy, balanced meals for their children from cheap market fruits and vegetables. They also teach them how to tend to a personal garden for even more healthy, sustainable and a ff ordable food choices. Last Day at Biryogo - IPC Presentations

Today we got to present to the medical staff at Biryogo! It was very fun and challenging at the same time. Elise translated for us. We had our slides in english and kinyarwanda so everyone could understand. We tried to be interactive and the staff liked that! They were all so nice and payed close attention. They were all taking notes and were excited to implement our simple suggestions. I loved working with all of these people. They were so nice and welcoming to us.
